desert botanical garden

phoenix, arizona

The second of a three-part installation series, Water is a landscape intervention built entirely on-site over 5 days, meticulously placed into the contours of the landscape. Our concept was to map the seasonal flow of water through this particular area of the garden. Using one of our signature techniques, we built a space-frame of 8,000 yellow-painted wood rods, carefully designing around the rocks, agave, and yuccas of the garden.

“Flowing” through the landscape of desert flora and spilling over boulders, a flood of vibrant color saturates the muted desert colors and highlights the existing heritage plants. Eddies of red garden flowers, unusual in such a landscape, are found at the edges of the flow. Curious visitors discover the installation as they walk the garden paths, and then pass along the elevated boardwalk to observe the intricate details from above.
